A traditional cottage pie is made with ground beef and topped with mashed potatoes. We used potato slices, which saves time and looks good, too. For a shepherd's pie, use lamb. There are many variations of the recipe, but the defining ingredients include minced or ground beef with onions (and sometimes other vegetables) in.

Steps to make Cottage Pie:

  1. First, boiled the potatoes then mashed it together with butter, milk, salt and pepper to your liking until it silky smooth in texture. Set aside.
  2. Heat the oil on the pan, put onion and stir until brownish and have nice fragrance then add the minced beef. After that, put all the veggies, bay leaves, tomato crush/paste and seasoning. Set aside.
  3. Put the beef filling on pyrex or pie dish, layer with mashed potato. For final touch you can add permesan cheese or parsley. Then put on the oven 170 degrees until mashed potato a bit crusty.

This is a meat and carb heavy dish, so it goes really well with fresh side salads like a Rocket Salad with Balsamic Dressing, or a Garden Salad with French or Italian Dressing. I recently served it with this Carrot Salad with a Honey Dijon Dressing which was a hit!. For a cosy meal on a cold winter night, try it with a side of Glazed Roasted Carrots and Sautéed. Cottage pie is a meat pie that is topped with mashed potatoes and baked in the oven. Now, cottage pie and shepherd's pie differ only in the type of ground meat they are made with.
